“So.” Marcus sat up a little straighter in his chair. “The touring show with Jack Mitchel I mentioned before: no pressure, but we need to plan for around twelve to fifteen paintings if possible. And we’ll need to start doing some promotional stuff, get some pictures of your new work for the catalogue, that kind of thing.”

“Twelve to fifteen? Shit!” Noa drained the last of the wine from her glass. “Where’s it going again?”

“Starting in London, then Edinburgh, and Newcastle. Then over to the States—New York, Washington, San Francisco, and Seattle.”

She sat back in her chair. “Sounds good. I haven’t exhibited in the US for a couple of years.”

He was a little taken aback by her passivity. “I know. I thought this would be a good way of reintroducing you to the scene. And Mitchel’s getting quite hot at the moment, so it should be good.” He’d been so worried about the notes, he hadn’t even considered that Noa might have met someone since moving here, but she seemed genuinely relaxed. Whoever was sending the notes obviously hadn’t figured out where Noa was staying, yet.

“Mitchel’s the guy who casts things, right?”

He smiled. “Yeah, that’s the one.” He reached for the wine bottle to pour the last of the wine in their glasses, only to find Noa’s hand covering the top of hers, barring him.

“Not for me thanks, you finish it.”

He couldn’t remember the last time Noa had refused a drink, but he wasn’t about to make an issue of it; he knew better. The earlier conversation had made him buoyant, gave him the courage to bring up the next topic. “So, are you still okay to come to the Slade Painters private view in a couple of weeks?”

Noa’s eyes seemed to turn into slits as they glared at him. “I guess.”

Now he just needed to plant the seed. Marcus steadied his nerves. “Well, I can probably swing it if you’re too busy down here with your new work.”

“Really?”

“Maybe. Especially with the touring show coming up.” He waited for her to meet his eyes. “That’s more important. If you don’t have time, then you don’t have time.” He raised his free hand to emphasise his point.

“Good to know.”

“Okay.” He drained the rest of his wine. “I’m gonna turn in.” He wanted to let the seed germinate for a while before mentioning it again. He just needed to find a way of placating the gallery for Noa’s absence at the private view. He got to his feet, making his way in the direction of the stairs, stopping by the hallway entrance he turned back around. “Can I take a look at your work in the morning before I leave?” He tried not to push too hard, but the work he’d seen had sparked his interest.

“Sure.”

He smiled at the ease of her reply. “And err…I know I haven’t met Nurse Clarke yet, but I’m really glad you have someone in your life.” There was a barely distinguishable nod in reply to his words.

“Good night, Marcus.
